BSURD -TOTENLIEDER

Absurd's early demos sounded like shit.

i usuallly prefer raw demos over studio shit, Morbid, Nihilist, The Paradise Lost demos, but Absurd demos are straight shit.

The infamous crimes associated with this act gave those shitty demos a cult status they don't deserve. Absurd rerecorded a lot of that material with a new lineup for the Pantheon split. The Absurd material on the Pantheon split was very primitive Impaled Nazarene, Venom and early Bathory worship by musicians that sounded like they started out playing Oi before they got into metal. The Absurd song Triumph of Death off the Pantheon split is one of my favorite songs ever! Absurd's Triumph of Death is a fucking singalong anthem and one of my absolute favorite songs!

This newer full length, Totenlieder has like one original member. It's mostly distorted mournful pagan/folk riffs and epic anthemic chanted viking battle hymn choruses done at the tempo of a slow burning church with the occasional blastbeat section..None of the ambient/samples intros/outros stuff you hear on later Bathory & Graveland. It all gets right to the metal with no intermissions or detours. Wolfsherz has some of the psychotic metal punk elements i loved on the Pantheon split. Wolfsherz is the best song on here . You get the feeling that with this studio record Absurd is trying to come off as more serious and professional , distancing themselves from their amateurish earlier material. Keeping the name despite the heavy lineup change to leech off the infamy and cult status associated with Absurd.. Overall it's powerful and moving and has a distinctive sound to it. This is Absurd's Blood Fire Death, not their Cold Lake!

RAMLORD-RAMLORD
This band is probably American. Ramlord combines interesting riffs and tempo changes with straight blast beats. This has an obvious black metal sound to it, but you can also hear a lot of Early Graves and Napalm Death in the breakdowns and vocals. This is decent for crossover black metal and is fairly original.

WOLVHAMMER/KRIEG SPLIT
This goes back & fourth from sounding like crust punks doing a shitty imitation of Krieg and a His Hero Is Gone/Tragedy depressive D-beat pastiche. They try to get epic with some Cloud Rat-esque screamo bullshit. Slaves to the Grime is a great track. But the rest of it gets too melodic & core.. The primitive noodling goes on too long. But Slaves to the Grime is a good track and Krieg's Eternal Victim is included on this split and Krieg fucking rules. Krieg's Eternal Victim overshadows Wolvhammer's contribution to the split significanlty. This is worth it for Eternal Victim&Slaves to the Grime. The rest is just filler.

LITTLE STAR BY JOHN LINDQVIST
This is the best novel by cult Swedish horror novelist John Lindqvist. It follows the story of a Jarboe/Galas -esque savant singer named after one of the members of the Meinhof group. The girl uses her voice to become a prophet of the new dark age. This novel does a vastly powerful job of depicting the tyranny of the masses and is seething with nihilism and misanthropic contempt. The lead girl of this novel is like a combination of T. Winter Damon's Maldoror, Edward Lee's Goddess of the New Dark Age and The Woman from Ketchum's film and novel The Woman.

Little Star is a call to arms against pop culture and a viral load of transgressive social criticism. This isn't escapist fiction. This is a challenging piece of Aesthetic Terrorism that will likely traumatize a lot of people who read it as it confronts them with the ugly brutal truths of our existence.

Lindqvist had a lot of mainstream success with his previous work and the americanized film version of his novel LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. After the success of his work within the mass market, he used his position and his brand name to release Little Star, a brutal subversive dangerous novel , through a mass market publisher. With his previous string of successes he was able to get this published. The novel features blurbs from Mtv.com and this novel won't simply be read by seasoned too far gone veterans of horror that have seen it all. No, a lot of civilians and impressionable teenagers will be infected by this novel's virus. A lot of this reminds me of Jarboe and Trevor Brown paintings .

This is one of the most powerful and disturbing novels iv read since Duet For the Devil By T. Winter Damon & Soma by Charlee Jacob. Duet for the Devil is considered by many the most hardcore & extreme horror novel ever written. If you think Peter Sotos & Randall Phillips is as good as it gets then you haven't read Soma or Duet for the Devil. Little Star is on that level . Thats how good Lindqvist's Little Star is.
