BLACK SABBATH FAQ BY MARTIN POPOFF

Martin  Popoff is in many ways to metal journalism what S.T. Joshi is to the horror field. Joshi is a scholar and brilliant analyst of traditional, classical and quiet horror and a vehement detractor of modern hardcore horror.

With Popoff, later Sabbath is ignored and criminally underrated like post Human Death. Most coverage of Sabbath from Hal Leonard tab books , tribute albums and greatest hits packages usually don't cover anything past the Ozzy era and even then emphasis is given to the first four or five records .

This excellent book on the other hand is a completist study and analysis of all aspects of Sabbath's  legacy. Popoff, for example, shines a light on how the mastering job on Born Again influenced extreme metal. Popoff doesn't mention Cannibal Corpse covering Zero The Hero on the Hammer Smashed Face single.

And Cannibal Corpse don't mention this Sabbath album in their official biography, Bible Of Butchery.

But Popoff answers the question as to why this was likely chosen as a cover.

Being an obscure deep cut. One of the more interesting extreme metal takes on Sabbath.

Not as interesting or hilarious as what Blowfly did  to Sabbath and Ac/DC on Black In The Sack, Better then Xasthur doing National Acrobat or Brutal Truth's Lord Of This World, Avulsed doing Neon Knights or Belphegor's take on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

My favorite Sabbath cover is Flower Travelin Band doing Black Sabbath on their Anywhere Lp from 1970. All the post drone metal shoegaze sludge dripping from the neck beards of hipster noise rock bands that's  become trendy lately was invented and pioneered decades earlier by Flower Travelin Band's Anywhere Lp.

Popoff incorrectly says no obvious Sabbath worship existed In the 1970s and erroneously states that Sucks cover of War Pigs from 1971 was the first recorded  Sabbath cover. That honor goes to Flower Travelin Band not Suck.

Another minor error is Popoff gives Vol 4 a rating of 8. Despite previously giving Vol 4 a rating of 10 in Riff Kills Man. The only review from Riff Kills Man that needed revision was In Uetro.

(The 20th Anniversary reissue has the original Albini mixes.The original Albini  mastering was neutered in post by a major label hack in the version reviewed by Popoff)

Popoff also declines to comment on the urban legend that the Live At Asbury Park New Jersey Ozzy era show was a board mix pressed and distributed by the New Jersey mob.

Popoff also claims there's a trace of Sabbath tribute to be found in Judas Priest's name. Kk Downing says on Page 42 of Heavy Duty Priest is named after a Bob Dylan song.

Also in Popoff's chapter on bands named after Sabbath no mention is made of Electric Wizard. The band that redefined heaviness! Their very band name is an amalgamation of two Sabbath tracks. They also used the same font Sabbath did on there S/T debut.

Earlier in Popoff's chapter on the doom genre, Sleep Vol  1 is cited but not Dopesmoker.

Book Review: Riff Kills Man

Riff Kills Man is Martin Popoff's first book. Later on, Popoff would become to traditional hard rock,proto/ heavy metal what Metalion is to extreme metal. Popoff's later books provide the definitive analysis and exegesis of many of the old gods.

Riff Kills Man is an autistic spectrum-esque completionist collection of 1,942 record reviews self published as a book. This is no "Nurse With Wound List". A lot of this is heavily focused on the majors and a lot of coverage is given to staple brand name acts. The focus on the exoteric is obvious.

Popoff is an expert archivist and a dedicated open minded fanatic. But he's admittedly out of his depth and comfort zone when he attempts to review the few examples of extreme metal included in this book.

Appallingly giving Bathory's The Return,Morbid Tales and Pleasure To Kill lower ratings then Stryper.

His lack of knowledge of extreme metal is made glaringly obvious in the very broad and incorrect way he uses the term grindcore as a convenient pejorative catch-all term to broadly describe various extreme metal records that have little to do with grindcore.

Popoff, I think, included token early examples of extreme metal despite personal feelings and lack of context for completionist archival state. The bad reviews serve the purpose of adding to the cult infamy and inaccessibility of the extreme bands covered. 

The book was published in 1992 . So information on those extreme sub-genres was still somewhat underground and inaccessible. So you can overlook Popoff calling Bathory grindcore and Danzig brutal black metal. The lurid and creative prose use to hilariously roast Hawkwind is very accurate constructive criticism backed by Popoff's informed opinion. It's also hilarious and makes you want to seek them out regardless of the rating But the extreme metal reviews are mostly conjecture filtered through the perception bias of a dedicated old school metalhead.

But you'll find a lot of info on obscure Nwobh, traditional heavy metal and hard rock bands buried alongside unfiltered commentary of major label bullshit. He provides some great insight on how much the Black Album sucks for example if you didn't already know that....So you can overlook Popoff dismissing Gorguts Erosion Of Sanity as grindcore. When in fact it was a cult classic that attempted to move old school death metal away from its speed obsessed thrash roots into more atmospheric,technical and progressive directions. And focus instead on tracking down all the traditional obscurities you'll discover within the labyrinthian confines of this tome.

Popoff neglects to mention how Randy Rhodes improvised and slightly reworked Iommi's iconic riffs. And doesn't make any comparisons between Eno's original Baby's on Fire and Roth's cover. Let alone the iconic solo in Eno's version.

TRVE ; THE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL SCENE BY KEVIN HOFFIN

This slim anemic book is $9 dollars prime.

As fittingly cheap and disposable as the author's value as a human being.

This is an analysis of Norwegian black metal from the left wing racist perspective of a hipster that most likely worships bands like Alcest and Wolves In The Throne Room. 

One of the biggest faults of this book is it criticizes the early Norwegian black metal scene members for being false Satanists simply because they didn't confirm to the orthodox status quo of Laveyian Satanism.

The author is apparently ignorant of the transcendent side of the left hand path.

The author's theory about Lavey's lack of approval making them false Satanists is the polar opposite of the truth. There may have been certain individuals within that scene that were neophyte Satanists but the fact remains the trve satanic underground operates through a clandestine current beneath the gaze of the false surface dwelling Church Of Satan herd.

The second integral fault of this book is it's author is clearly not a metalhead , let alone a Satanist , nor was he ever part of the Norwegian black metal scene.

So any opinion or value judgement this author voices regarding this subject is an uninformed opinion formed by conjecture and recycled hearsay gleamed from indirect dilettante sources.

The author did a lot of good research to compensate for his lack of any direct first hand knowledge of the subject.He discusses how King Olav christianized  Norway by force but even then, the author glosses over the full scope of the genocidal atrocities committed by christers. in a revisionist method similar to the tactics of holocaust denial conspiracy theorists. The unfortunate tendency of the author of this book to sympathize with christians undermines his integrity significantly.

When african-american protestors tore down statues and battled in the streets over racial subjugation and the genocidal degradation of their ancestors and made gangsta rap about killing the police and getting revenge on whitey, it was praised in the media as a progressive movement of civil rights and a source of empowerment.

When Norwegian youth wage war on the christian moral majority that forced christ upon them with force and massacred their ancestors, hypocritical posers like this author write essays criticizing their actions.

This book is yet another pompous attempt by the p.c. scene police to scale the ivory tower in a pathetic attempt to legitimize their own cowardice and extol their weakness as a virtue by quixotically throwing pebbles at a mountain.

SLAYER - D.X. FERRIS

Far better then Mciver's book on Slayer.

This updated edition covers Repentless and is a full length sequel to Ferris' seminal analysis of Reign In Blood.

Ferris wrote a fairly informative, in-depth and well researched book on Slayer. It is powerful insight on the most dedicated, legit and committed of the big four. Slayer kills all.

That statement doesn’t need to be expanded upon, defended, or explained any further.

Whatever the fuck you want to say about Slayer and later failed experiments to keep active, those mediocre later albums were still better then any other major label metal release of that decade. Slayer are gods of metal and are above the laws of man and thus above all scene politics.

This book reminds us of why Slayer kills all such as Jeff Hanneman putting himself at greater risk of death by refusing to get his arm amputated so he could still shred. This book is highly recommended and essential.

The only complaint I have is when Ferris starts voicing his ambivalent personal opinions about modern metal. Ferris has worked for Decibel.

Ferris make logically incorrect statements like calling Slipknot "The truest Nu Metal" Listening to and supporting the "The Truest Nu Metal" is like eating the least rotten food out of the dumpster or fucking the least infected crackwhore.

What's the fucking point?

Also Nu metal shouldn’t be dignified with the classification of Nu Metal. Its false metal pure and simple. Decibel lost most of its integrity when they chose to call Codex Obscurum humorless and elitist. Criticizing, instead of supporting, a dedicated group of metalheads that put in the ardent work to write, layout, finance and distribute a DIY print zine in this ear is as false as it gets.

Lamestream rock journalists that like to pretend they’re better metalheads because their unbiased approach makes them more open minded. But in most cases that just makes more sympathetic to weak poser shit.

In a lot of cases, these journalists perpetuate the poser trends by legitimizing them in print. Instead of covering the new Deathhammer, Mitochondrion etc album, they'd rather give coverage to whatever trendy poser shit the majors have released lately.

When you’re running a corporate sponsored glossy bar-coded magazine, You have to answer to people outside of the metal underground. You don’t have the full creative license to say what you want and you have to pander to your corporate sponsors… So you don’t go out of business.

Because there are financial concerns involved that undermine the integrity of the writers for these magazines. If you’re DIY and financing it and distributing it yourself, your opinions hold more weight and are more credible. Untainted by major label coercion.

Slayer Kills!

BIBLE OF BUTCHERY THE OFFICAL BIOGRAPHY OF.CANNIBAL CORPSE

-Joel McIver

This book basically consists of extended interviews with the band compiled by McIver in a Please Kill Me -esque fashion.

McIver is one of those tourist dilettantes that, despite being on the surface a dedicated metalhead, feels the need to use comedic relief,hipster irony and pedantic rationalizations to justify and apologize to the herd for his interest in metal.

The type of posturing public relations weekend warrior asshole that instead of embracing his outsider status feels the need to ensure the herd that metalheads are really normal people and safe...

Fuck off and die with that cowardly shit.

Standing pride against the world of shit is an integral part of being a metalhead and the guilty have no pride.

This bio has no interviews or input from Chris Barnes for whatever reason...

The first four Cannibal Corpse albums were brutal classics of death metal that were still rooted in thrash and retained a degree of grind to it.

The unapologetic gore obsessed misanthropic splatter lyrics set a cult standard.

After Alex Webster took over writing the lyrics for Cannibal Corpse albums they suffered significantly in quality.

The later stuff never crossed over

It evolved interestingly in terms of technique.

Cannibal Corpse remained the only above-ground extreme metal band to chart and remains one of the only extreme metal bands to achieve a high degree of commercial success without selling out.

Cannibal Corpse never put out a Cold Lake or a Heartwork. 

That's honorable especially considering the fact that most bands lose it after four albums then they peak and go rot and roll or whatever the fuck.

This bio has a lot of interesting history of the band and is well worth reading.

Despite Mcivers unfortunate involvement and the lack of input from Barnes.
